We have recently
started using Smile
Cards® in our practice.
This is something designed to benefit all of us. Here’s how Smile Cards
work:
---if
you’d like to refer patients to our practice, one of our team
members will give you as many Smile Cards as you wish. You can give these
cards to friends, extended (out of your
household) family members, and
co-workers.
---each
Smile Card entitles your referred patient to a $50 credit on his or
her first visit to our office.
---when
one of your referrals comes in for a first visit, we contact
you and give you your choice of $25 gift certificate
as our thanks for your thoughtfulness. You can choose
any of the following:
---Outback
---Borders
---a $25 credit towards a massage by our hygienist and
registered massage therapist Caroline “Magic Hands”
Talarico.
---a SuperCertificate® that you can use at the web
shopping company of your choice. You chose from among
hundreds of participating merchants. We give you the
SuperCertificate, you contact your favorite merchant, and the
merchant sends you a $25 gift certificate to be used at that
web site.

your referrals, support, feedback, and good wishes.
Smiles
for Life 2007
Over the last nine
years our
office has raised over $50,000 for charity through the Smiles
for Life Foundation.
Once again this year, we will be running our fundraiser
from March 1 to June 30.
Here’s
how it works:
Discus Dental (founded by Bill Dorfman of Extreme
Makeover fame) donates top-shelf whitening materials to
participating Smiles for Life dentists. Leo DentaLab in
Woodlyn donates their time and skill to make the bleaching
trays. My team
and I donate our time and expertise to provide you with a
whiter more attractive smile. We waive our usual fee
for bleaching and instead ask that you make a donation of $295
or more to Smiles for Life. Half of the monies we
raise will be distributed to over 200 children’s causes
nationwide by Garth Brooks’ Teammates for Kids
Foundation. The
other half of the money goes to a local charity that we feel
is especially deserving.
It’s usually a cause that is chronically underfunded,
where your donations could do the most
good.
This
year, we will be supporting the
Hometown
Senior
Center,
located in Media
Fellowship House.
The Center is a multi-purpose drop-in facility which
offers a variety of services, programs, and activities. Their mission is to
encourage independent, healthy, and active living resulting in
positive physical and emotional wellness. The Center is open to
independent seniors age 60 and older.
Programs
include:
---Meals
on Wheels.
Delaware
County
seniors receive wholesome meals delivered to their
homes.
---Weekly
on-site activities including exercise programs, country line
dancing, games, cards, and socialization.
---Classes,
including yoga, poetry, art, and Tai Chi.
---Monthly
health screening and lectures sponsored by the Main Line
Health System.
---Monthly
trips and parties.
---Community
service projects, including the Delaware County Senior
Environmental Corps.
---Volunteers
go to the homes of seniors to help with yard work, minor home
repairs and transportation.
---Nutritious
meals
---Help
with filling out forms, applying for benefits, peer
counseling, and income tax preparation.
We
are proud to offer our support to the
Senior
Center. Please tell your
friends, family, and co-workers about Smiles for Life. The more we get the
message out, the more money we can raise for good
deeds.
Dental
myth-busting
I’m going to burst some dental bubbles
here:
---Tartar-control gum
prevents tartar from under the gumline.
Wrong! These gums only reduce
tartar above the gumline, where good brushing and flossing can
prevent tartar formation. Michelle, Caroline and
I recommend that you
not use these toothpastes. They contain sodium
pyrophosphate, which
can cause normal teeth to become super-sensitive in a
significant minority of people. Avoid this
stuff!
---Diet sodas don’t cause
cavities.
Wrong! The
carbon dioxide in soda combines with water to produce a very
acidic pH. This
can cause erosion of tooth structure leading to cavities.
Soda with sugar is even worse, and the
worst offender of all is Mountain Dew. Lots of sugar, very
low pH. If you
want to do an experiment to see how many cavities you can get
in the shortest time, stock up on Mountain
Dew!
---Hard toothbrushes remove bacteria
more effectively than soft brushes.
Also wrong! Studies over many
years have shown that soft brushes are just as effective at
removing bacterial plaque. Also, medium and hard
brush bristles can abrade gum tissue away, causing
dramatically increased tooth sensitivity to cold liquids as
well as serious problems down the road.
