Smiles
for Darfur
relief
During my adult life there
have been several cases of genocide, including
southwestern Africa and the former
Yugoslavia. In every case, I said
to myself, “How horrible!” and did nothing. I can no longer sit
idly by while so many people are raped, tortured, bombed,
maimed, and destroyed in Darfur, Sudan. Beginning August 1,
you have a chance to brighten your smile while you brighten
the lives of the African Muslims who are being slaughtered in
Darfur. Discus Dental has been
kind enough to donate kits of Nite White®, the pre-eminent
nighttime tooth whitener. In return, my office
team and I will donate our time and expertise. Instead of charging
our normal $395 fee for at-home whitening, we are asking for a
$295 donation to Darfur Act Coalition in return for your new
smile. You get a
tax deduction and an improved self-image, and all share in the
feeling that we’ve done something good for the people of
Darfur.
Darfur
Alert Coalition (DAC) provides Darfurian speakers for
educational events. DAC works politically to
protect the people of Darfur (the Sudanese government that is
bombing Darfurian villages is being asked by the U.N. to
safeguard the lives of these very people!). DAC also provides
solar cookers to the women of Darfur, who are being raped as they search
for firewood with which to cook their
meals.
I
am asking a personal favor of each of you who reads this
newsletter:
please forward (or cut and paste this section and send
it on) to a friend, family member, or co-worker. If you are affiliated
with a church or
synagogue, please forward this to the
congregational mailing list. It is time we all
stopped being bystanders to genocide and said, “Never again!”

Changing
a life
Every so often
I get a chance
to do something few people do….I can make a real change in
someone’s life. I
received the following testimonial and letter from a patient,
and it means a lot to me to be able to share it with
you.
“For me, sedation dentistry offered
the answer to a lifetime of pain and anxiety during dental
procedures. It provided me with the confidence to complete a
large amount of restorative dentistry in a peaceful, relaxed
way and forever changed the way I will think about dental
procedures. I
never realized that I could have a healthy mouth and an
attractive smile again.”
Here’s an excerpt of the letter that
followed:
“So, despite the fact that I am an
educated, health care professional and know I should have
taken better care of myself, I just had so much trouble
overcoming my past experiences that I couldn’t bring myself to
do what I knew I should be doing. I’m not sure what exactly
made me take the leap to come to see you that first time but I
will be forever grateful that I did. I feel extremely blessed
to have found you and your wonderful team of caring folks.
I
can never thank you all enough for letting me be me, helping
the inner Judy come out and never making me feel bad about being afraid. You and
your staff helped to make me feel good about myself and find a
new part of me that I actually like! Wow, it’s like a
personality transplant almost. Several people who have known
me for years saw me over the end of year holidays and wanted
to know whether I was in love, or what exactly had happened. I
looked different they said, and a really good
different!
Despite all my questions, you answered
each and every one of them and never made me feel bad for
asking. As they say, knowledge is power and in this case it
really was for me. You always told me when things were going
to hurt and after that, helped me to realize that I could
actually trust you to do the best thing for my care with the
least hurt as possible. You actually cared about how I felt
and whether I had discomfort or anxiety. What a novel
concept!
After the second sedation visit, I
went home shaking my head feeling really good that I had
actually laughed in your dental chair. By my third visit, I
remember sitting at work the night before and thinking to
myself, I’m actually looking forward to going to my
appointment because I know I can deal with it and it will only
be uncomfortable for a bit and I can do ok with that, plus, I
really like these people and they really like me! Of course
the nitrous helped, and I think maybe got me and Lyn going
with the giggles but it’s healthy to laugh, especially at
oneself.
I treasure my “Becoming a Really Good
Dental Patient” certificate and it’s posted on the fridge to
continually remind me of possibilities.
After these past few months of dealing
with other health issues and other health care professionals,
I continually realize how grateful I should be, that I found
you and your staff. It takes special people to really care for
others like you all do and I want you each to know how rare
and precious that is to patients like me. You didn’t have all
the facts and yet you didn’t make judgments, you just cared
for me in the most compassionate way possible and made me feel
good about it all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for
all of the wonderful things you all have done for me, not the
least of which are my pretty new teeth. You all set a shining
example of what all health care professionals should aim for!
Please feel free to share any or all
of this with your staff. I would like them to know what a
positive effect you and they have had on my
life.
Sincerely, Judy E.”
Please feel free to talk to us at any
time if you feel sedation dentistry could help you or someone
you know.
“Herbal”
doesn’t mean “no side effects”
I take herbal medications.
Valerian is a great mind-relaxer; I’d hate to be without
it.
However,
the fact that something is herbal or all-natural doesn’t mean
it’s chemical-free or has no side-effects. The chemicals are
being produced naturally (in plants, for example; for example, aspirin
was discovered in willow bark), not
synthetically.
Ginkgo, ginger, and ginseng can each
increase bleeding.
If you’re taking any of these, let us know before any
procedure in which bleeding is likely to occur (extraction,
gum surgery, periodontal root planning). We’ll want you off the
herbal remedy for several days before your dental
appointment.
It’s also a good idea to make sure
your medical doctor is aware of any herbal medication you may
be taking. Some
herbs will interact harmfully with some prescription
drugs.
Did you
know?
In Shakespeare’s time, mattresses were
secured to bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the
ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer. Hence the phrase,
“Goodnight, sleep tight.”
It
was the accepted practice in ancient
Babylon
that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would
supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer
and, because the ancient calendar was lunar based, this period was called
the honey month.
That was the derivation
of today’s term, “honeymoon.”
